Welcome to another blog, about another book I read this year. ‘Number the stars’, sure was a memorable book. Historic fictions and especially the ones plotted around the horrible nazi era, are always moving. They are fiction for say, but they reflect the reality of those times, though not exactly. This book tells us a combination of untold stories that many families lived in those toughest times; it shows how humanity brings people together, when inhuman tendencies try to take over the world. This story is written from the perspective of a ten year old girl, who is not a kid anymore but not even an adult. And that’s exactly what makes this book even more touchy! I listened to this audiobook, and that made me finish it in single day, which had more impact.

The story revolves around two little girls , Annemarie and Ellen, who are classmates and neighbors and best friends, living in Copenhagen in the year of 1943. Like any other ten year olds, these two are full of dreams and hopes for future. They are unaware of harshness of circumstances they are living in, and have not yet lost touch of innocence. They see nazi guards everywhere but are not exactly scared of them, these girls accept them as a part of normal life. They overhear their parents discussing many Jewish families taken away by guards, but again they never knew any alternate reality. So even in the depressing times they are enjoying their childhood. Until one day when Ellen’s parents get a news that the guards are after their family. This news changes everything for them. Yes Ellen’s family is Jewish, but not Annemarie’s. Anne Marie’s family being Christian is safer, and they take over Ellen as their own, in case the guards show up, and until her parents figure out a way to get out of the country.

And thus begins the adventurous, thrilling and very emotional journey of these little best friends. At times we feel thankful that the girls don’t understand the depth of things happening around them, and at times we think about how scarred their minds would have become. I won’t say much about the ending of this book, because it wasn’t black and white , happy or sad; but it was the best way this book could have ended. This book is perfect for every teenager to know what people went through those times, it’s perfect to make anyone feel blessed about the lives they are living and it’s just the perfect book when you want to read something amazing in short time. I will recommend this book for not only reading ones, but also for many re-reads.

More about another book in the next blog. Till then keep reading and stay safe.
